halp! i'm being attacked! [Dec. 30th, 2009|10:08 pm]

parenting101

[sarahness]
My daughter (almost 7 months) is a beast. She hits/pinches/hair pulls/bites/scratches me (and herself) all the time! She obviously doesn't do it to be mean, but it hurts (seriously, she can draw blood)! Other than duct tape and drugging her, is there any solution to getting her to play nicer? Right now, after she hurts me, I just hold her hands and give her a firm "No." (I know she doesn't get it, but someday she will, right?) She just smiles and wiggles her hands out of mine, and goes about doing her beastly business. Any tips are appreciated. Thanks!

staticy hair [Dec. 30th, 2009|09:10 pm]

my daughter's hair is extremely staticy.  short of shaving it off in frustration, what else works?  I've tried lotion (wikihow told me so), water, hairspray, this hair shine stuff that's like straight oil and we already have a humidifier.

Blow outs [Dec. 30th, 2009|01:11 pm]

parenting101

[alathia]
Are there really parents out there that have never had to contend with a blow out when using disposable diapers? I find this mind boggling, and am somewhat envious. So P101, two questions:

1) Did your kids have blow outs with disposables? Yes/No
2) Tell me your worse blow out story.

----

1). Yes, with my first. Duh, it's the main reason we switched to cloth. No blow outs!

2). Car trip to visit my husband's grandmother about 2 hours away. When we stopped because he was screaming his head off (more than usual, my kids also seem to hate the car seat), we found out he had poop up to his arm pits, exploded all over the car seat cover, and dripping down his pants all over me while I was wrestling him out of the poopsplosion zone. Ugh. Worse. Car trip. Ever. I think we probably spent 45 minutes in the rest area trying to clean things with baby wipes and clothing changes and airing out the car and it still reeked of poo.

How often do your kids get sick? [Dec. 30th, 2009|01:32 pm]

parenting101

[aimingforpeace]
My 5 year old started play school during the fall and has since gotten sick about once a month. Previously, she would hardly get sick at all.

My husband's concerned that this means that there's something seriously wrong with her. I think that she's getting exposed to more germs in higher concentration than she used to and that eventually her immune system will catch up.

Am I being too lax?

Growth [Dec. 30th, 2009|10:28 am]

parenting101

[hjart]
Lordy... stop growing so dang fast child!

My 8 month old son is 22lbs, 31 inches, size 18 months, and currently going though yet another growth spurt!

When did your babes stop growing so dang fast? He's only 3 inches shorter and 12 lbs lighter than his 2.5 year old cousin! She is between 2T and 3T, and I've pondered trying a few 2T shirts on mine.

We usually use cloth so pants are not a problem, but we are going to be traveling in disposables. How do you keep their pants up? He literally crawled out of them the other day. Going back to 12m are waaaay too short.

Stealth growth/travel related car seat question...

At two of the stops, we are renting cars. We can rent car seats, but only forward facing ones. We are Not taking ours with us (been there, had the argument, its 3-1 against. We are traveling with my parents who use the "we took you around the world without one and you were fine" argument). How awful would it be to put him in a forward seat for two days? I figure its better than taxis with no car seats. He meets and exceeds the weight reqs, and has had wonderful head control since he was about two weeks.

Also...

What do you know about the britax frontier? Our boulevard with the continually adjustable head rest has been wonderful with our monster. The frontier claims to be for 2 years and up but he should meet all the size requirements by the time we will want to forward face him sometime after he is a year when we successfully TTC and are about half way through pregnancy #2 (probably around when he is 18 months or later). We would like to have the boulevard for #2 and the other that goes to 100lbs and counts as a booster for our son. Thoughts?

Let me preface this by saying that to protect their liability, a call to the nurse advisor line at my clinic always results in a reccomendation to come in and be seen, since they can't diagnose over the phone and what-not. (And of course, I realize that strangers on the internet can't diagnose her either; I'm just wondering what YOU would do in my situation.)

My 7 week old daughter has a bit of a dry cough and is slightly congested as of last evening. She doesn't have a fever or any other symptoms. She is eating and sleeping normally, but is a little bit more fussy than usual.

I'd prefer not to take her into the clinic and expose her to all the yuckiness there if they're just going to tell me there's nothing I can really do for her. So, WWYD?

If it's relevant, she's breastfed. I've heard of squirting breastmilk up the nose, but I'm not exactly sure how to make that happen. I know how to hand express, but it just kind of drips out; I can't make it "squirt" in a stream.

Another question, how often should I be sucking out her nose?

My son has started the joyous process of teething. I'm wondering, have any of you tried the amber necklaces? Were you pleased/displeased?
Where did you buy them? I did a google search but I don't entirely trust the initial sites that came up.
Thanks!

Heyo P101, it's your favorite baby-daddy here.

I've got a question and an information solicitation for you all.

What are you doing for New Years? This is our first holiday season with our daughter (5mths old) and I'm wondering what to expect. Should I just forget the days when I could stay up and count down to the New Year? Or do you party on well into your parenting years? How well have your kids dealt with going to New Years parties at others' houses? Should we just stay home and countdown?

Reply with your plans, experiences, suggestions, criticism (not something typically found in this comm right?), etc. Bonus points for New Years pictures of cuteness.

Jonesa3 OUT!

ETA: FINE! I guess I'm NOT the favorite baby-daddy around these parts. Whatever. ): ... D: ... ): ... DX

Any educators out there? [Dec. 29th, 2009|11:08 am]

parenting101

[conuly]
My niece Ana is reading at somewhere above a "J" level. J seems to mean "A Porcupine Named Fluffy", which I just outright bought her for Christmas because she kept taking it out for school and I thought she should be fair to the other children.

Last year she was among the best readers in her class, reading at a "G" level. Children reading above an "F" level were to write five sentences in their reading log over the summer. They wanted the kids reading at at least a... "B" level, I think.

The teachers judge what level a book is and write the letter with a sharpie on the cover. It's not just this school, I've bought used books that clearly come from other schools that have the same system.

How do I know what level a book is? What's a reasonable range of level for first grade when they started teaching reading in kindergarten? I want to get (more) books for the classroom as a gift, but I want to get books that are most useful, not ones that will be too hard or too easy for most children most of the year. I'm also sorting through our bookshelves and want to put aside books at the appropriate level - if some of our picture books are at a second grade or kindergarten level, how much easier it is to just give them to that teacher directly than to give them to the first grade. How is this determined?

Help? Please? Even if you don't know the system, if you could say "Well, an average kid could read THIS book in October, THIS book in January, and THIS book in June" or "An averagely slow reader would probably be reading books THIS hard by May", it'd be a help. I don't like Ana's teacher that much and strive to be pleasant by avoiding unnecessary social interactions. (She's a perfectly nice woman and a competent teacher, from what I've seen. I just didn't click with her, and am falling back on "Well, I'm not the mom!" as a Good Reason to not bother.)

Crying in sleep [Dec. 29th, 2009|10:43 am]

What do you do with a baby who's crying in her sleep? The past two nights (and I think it must be the teeth) one of my babies has taken to moaning almost continuously around 4 a.m. I've gone in both nights after a bit, and actually woken her up, held her a bit and put her back down, because seemingly, nothing is wrong with her. She cries for a moment and then goes back to sleep. She starts moaning in her sleep again though, around 6:30. Is there anything I can or should do for her? Should I wake her up each time, or leave her be? She's honestly dead asleep, or at least has been when I've gone in to check. She's warm enough, tee shirt, fleece nightie and blanket. She's not peeing through her diapers. She's dry and warm and asleep and... crying. I'm confused.

Couple of questions [Dec. 28th, 2009|10:58 pm]

parenting101

[hippiecritter]
Hello P101ers! :D

For those of you who do use or have used baby signing with your babes, at what age (theirs, not yours, lol) did you start? My daughter is about 7 weeks old and I'm wondering when it would be appropriate/useful to take a baby signing class with her.

And.... yet another sleep question. My daughter has come into somewhat of a routine with when she sleeps. She usually takes a long-ish nap (1-2 hours) in the late morning and again in the evening, with little catnaps sprinkled in throughout the day. She cluster feeds starting around 9 pm, sometimes falling asleep for 10-15 minutes between eating. She goes down for her longest stretch of sleep around 1 am, sleeping for about 4 hours.

My question is whether or not there is a reasonable way to gradually coax this routine into an earlier "bedtime" than 1 am? I'm pretty much your run of the mill crunchy LJ mama, so no CIO or trying to force a different schedule on her, just tweaking the schedule she's fallen into a little bit. ;)

Tall and skinny boy [Dec. 28th, 2009|06:00 pm]

parenting101

[lutine]
I'm coming across an issue with my son's clothing. He'll be 3 months on the 30th and he's really tall and skinny, so his 0-3 month onesies no longer snap at the crotch. He wears cloth diapers, so the added bulk doesn't help either. However, I just tried one of the 3-6 month onesies on him and it's falling off his shoulders because he's so skinny. I'm not really sure what the solution should be. If we're just at home I suppose I could leave his 0-3 onesies unsnapped or keep him in t-shirts, but they always ride up and it's annoying. He has sleepers also that won't snap at the crotch, but the larger size falls off his shoulders. Sleep sacks likewise fall off. Any ideas for keep my little one clothed??

First, thanks for all the advice from my puking baby post. I stopped giving her soy and got a milk-based formula and have given her more solids and some whole milk occasionally and she hasn't spit up or vomited at all! Yay!

Now I have a couple questions about loveys.

My son carries blankets with him and freaks out if people mess with them. His sister(11m) always takes them and runs away laughing so my son(28m) screams and/or hits her. The obvious solution to me is to stop her first, but it's not always possible. Of course I don't just sit around and let him hit her either. Anyway we've had discussions on whether or not she knows what she's doing and is doing it to upset him. Laughing and running away makes it seem so, but she could also think she's playing with him. I don't know. What do you think, internet?

Second, you know when kid1 hits kid2 with a toy, you take the toy away? Well, what about if he hits her with the blanket? I'll either take it away for a minute then give it back or hold on to it so he can't whip it around. Either way he freaks out and screams for his blankie. On one hand it should be the same as anything, hitting gets it taken away, but it seems like it could have different rules since it's his lovey. I don't want him to think he's allowed to whip people just because his blanket is special, you know?

Third, what about time-outs? If your child has a lovey are they allowed to take it with them to time-outs? I had a blankie myself as a kid and it getting taken away felt like the most horrible thing ever, so I tend to think about that and let him take it to time-out.

Okay, what's within the "normal" range [Dec. 28th, 2009|11:57 am]

Spit up. My 5 week old spits up after nearly every feeding. It's' not extreme and I know it's pretty much expected. She doesn't seem to be uncomfortable. But what I'm worried about is that she seems to be choking a lot. Like she can't breathe in and coughs. I've tried different head elevations while feeding, burp during and feeding. It never lasts long, it just worries me.

She also seems to be developing a type of rash (i know you're not doctors). Little red dots around her cheeks, neck and upper chest. We think it's from having a moist towel/burp cloth around her neck while eating - it gets wet from feeding dribble and spit up and we change cloths with every feeding. She doesn't seem bothered by this rash thing. I've put her in loose onesies and I've wiped her face in hopes that her skin will dry and not be irritated.

Any tips?

On the Night Before Christmas recording book: This morning it started going off by itself! So I woke to my in-laws seemingly haunting my house! Oh, and yesterday I meant to say that my son was holding an xbox controller just like his father....but I'm sure that wouldn't have made the snark any less lame!

Also, why does my children's poop smell like old ladies? It's distinct...it can be argued that old ladies smell like that because of death...but what does that say about my kids????

constipation miracle worker! [Dec. 28th, 2009|10:27 pm]

dunno if any of you ladies know about this, but sweet potato + milk = instant relief of constipation for your little one!!

my little girl has been suffering from really bad constipation for months (4-7 days without a BM :( ). then my hubby suggested an old remedy his mom taught him: eating sweet potato while drinking milk. we've been trying it out for the past month and it works like a charm! you just cook the sweet potato (baked, boiled, steamed, etc.), feed it to your little one while giving them some milk (this might not work if your LO can't have cows milk), wait an hour or two and your LO is guaranteed to wanna poop. note: make sure to stay home after you feed this to them, because it really empties them out :P

i am just soo happy that i don't have to resort to suppositories or meds to get her to go. just taking the trip to the peds to let them check her out is a pain because they always say the same thing (give them more fiber and fluids, blah blah blah). now, i'm soooo relieved and i can also use this to make her a bit more regular :D hope this helps anyone who's been through the anguish of a constipated little toddler like i have! :D
